Big production numbers started in 1967 with the introduction of the Bluebird, or 510, or in Europe, the Datsun 1600. The first ones in the U.S. were 1968 models . The L-series engine has been used in many family sedans, sports cars and pickup trucks, in four and six-cylinder configurations. Similar to the BMW 2002 engine, the L-series Datsun in-line engine has a chain-driven overhead camshaft, intake and exhaust ports on the left side of the head and five main bearings for fours and seven mains for six-cylinder engines. The block extends below the center of the main bearings for added rigidity. Five or seven main bearings are used at the front and rear and between each crank throw; five for fours and seven in the sixes. The induction system varies from the single, two-throat Hitachi and SU-type twin carburetors to Bosch L=Jetronic fuel injection. The L-series induction system was topped off with turbocharging on the ’81 280ZX. Not only has the L-series engine proved its durability over thousands of miles in family sedans, sports cars and pickup trucks, it’s a formidable competitor in many types of racing. Notable are off road-racing pickup trucks and road-racing sedans and sports cars. In turbocharged, fuel-injected form, the L28 has produced in excess of 800HP There are nine basic L-series engines: L13, L14, L16, L18, L20A, L20B, L24, L26 and L28.
